IPR Invisalign teeth shaving and tooth extraction make room in different ways. Interproximal reduction (IPR) removes a small, planned amount of enamel between teeth. Extraction removes a whole tooth. Neither is required for every Invisalign treatment or braces plan. If you want braces without tooth extraction in NJ, ask where the needed space can safely come from.

Reversible? |
No. Enamel does not grow back. |
No. The tooth does not return. |
IPR can help with modest crowding or tooth shape. It works with aligners and traditional metal braces, but cannot replace every extraction. Your orthodontist checks enamel, fillings, decay and gum health before planning it. Ask which teeth need IPR, how much enamel would be removed and whether you could avoid it.
For IPR, the clinician uses a fine strip or instrument, smooths the surfaces and checks the space. You may feel pressure or vibration; routine IPR generally needs no injection. Some people have temporary sensitivity. Brush and floss as usual, and never file your teeth at home.
A systematic review found no observed increase in cavities, enamel changes, gum changes or sensitivity in eight controlled studies, but rated the evidence low to very low quality. Good dental care still matters.

Can you avoid extraction with braces or Invisalign?
Sometimes. Expansion or planned tooth movement may make enough room, depending on age, jaw development and bite. Teeth must stay supported by bone and gums. Early care may help a growing child, but it cannot guarantee that an extraction will not be needed later.
If crowding is severe, front teeth protrude or the bite needs a larger change, an orthodontist may recommend extraction. The other teeth must then move into that space. Choosing aligners over braces does not remove the space problem. Ask how each of your treatment options would affect your bite, gums and facial profile. A second opinion is reasonable before an irreversible step.
Your Passaic, NJ consultation
At Eisenberger and Meister Orthodontics, your orthodontist can assess your teeth, bite and gums, then explain how much space is needed. A digital scan can show planned movements, not guarantee the result. Ask:
-
Where will the needed space come from?
-
If IPR is proposed, which teeth and how much enamel?
-
If extraction is proposed, why would other approaches not work?
-
Would different orthodontic appliances change the space plan?
Families can discuss Invisalign, clear braces and LightForce custom braces at a complimentary consultation. The team can also explain financing. Ask about every irreversible step before deciding.

FAQ
Why did my dentist shave my teeth for Invisalign?
Your clinician may have used IPR to make room for crowded teeth. Ask how much enamel was removed and how that space fits your aligner plan.
Can I get extractions with Invisalign?
Yes. If other methods cannot safely make enough room, an orthodontist may plan extractions with Invisalign.
What does IPR mean in dental?
IPR stands for interproximal reduction: controlled removal of enamel between selected teeth.
Can I get Invisalign without removing wisdom teeth?
Often, yes. Wisdom teeth do not automatically need removal for Invisalign. Your orthodontist will check their position and any separate dental concerns.
