LightForce 3D-printed braces and traditional braces both move teeth with fixed brackets and wires. Unlike traditional braces with standard metal brackets, LightForce braces use custom ceramic brackets designed for your teeth. They look less noticeable, while metal braces often cost less. Neither guarantees a faster result.

How LightForce 3D-printed braces work

An orthodontist creates a digital model of your teeth and plans the desired movements using advanced software. LightForce uses 3D-printed technology to make patient-specific brackets and placement trays. The trays support accurate placement; an archwire then guides movement. You still return for progress checks and adjustments.
Traditional braces also follow an individualized plan and can involve digital planning, but use prefabricated brackets. With either system, your orthodontist monitors progress and makes adjustments.
At Eisenberger and Meister Orthodontics, the LightForce option is custom 3D-printed ceramic braces. LightForce describes its scan-to-bond workflow; ask which materials your proposed braces use rather than assuming every 3D-printed bracket has the same composition.
What to expect from LightForce braces treatment
At your first visit, the orthodontist examines your bite and takes records. After planning, the team arranges fabrication of the 3D-printed brackets and trays. At placement, the trays guide bonding before the wire goes in. Follow-ups track movement and allow wire or elastic changes. After treatment, retainers help maintain your smile.
Where the differences matter day to day
Customization and treatment planning
LightForce uses advanced technology to shape each bracket for its intended position. Placement trays help transfer the plan to your teeth. With conventional braces, the orthodontist positions standard brackets and refines the result during treatment. Either plan may change as your teeth move.
Ask which bite issues your plan addresses. A digital preview is an intended result, not a guaranteed finish date.
Appearance
Our ceramic LightForce brackets blend with teeth more than metal brackets do, though the wire and sometimes the ties remain visible. For a removable option, ask about clear aligners; they require consistent wear.
Speed, appointments and comfort
Custom positioning may reduce visits for some patients, but treatment time depends on your bite, hygiene, broken appliances and prescribed elastic wear.
“LightForce patients averaged 8–11 visits, versus 12–15 visits with conventional brackets.” – Journal of Clinical Orthodontics
Those four-practice averages cannot predict your schedule.
Either type can cause tenderness. How your braces fit may affect comfort, but custom brackets cannot promise pain-free treatment. Tell us if a bracket or wire rubs.
Food and cleaning
With either option, avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods that can damage brackets, and cut crunchy foods into small pieces. Brush around each bracket and floss around the wire with a threader or orthodontic flosser. Tooth-colored brackets need the same careful cleaning as metal ones.
How much do LightForce braces cost compared with metal braces?

LightForce’s custom design and ceramic materials may cost more than metal braces. Case complexity affects either fee. Compare written estimates based on your treatment.
|
Ask for this in each estimate |
Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|
|
Total treatment fee and expected payment schedule |
A lower monthly payment does not necessarily mean a lower total |
|
Records, scans, bonding and follow-up visits |
These may be included in a comprehensive fee or treated separately |
|
Repairs, replacement brackets and unexpected visits |
Broken appliances can affect both cost and scheduling |
|
Retainers and follow-up after braces |
The treatment is not over when brackets come off |
|
Insurance estimate and financing terms |
Benefits, eligibility and out-of-pocket payments vary |
Our free consultation includes a chance to discuss both estimates. We offer flexible financing, including 0% APR options and no hard credit checks, and can explain insurance and payment terms.
Which option fits your priorities?
Consider LightForce braces if you value less visible, custom fixed brackets. Wires still show, cleaning remains essential, and fees may be higher. Ask whether your case might require fewer visits.
Traditional metal braces may suit a child, teen or adult seeking a more cost-conscious fixed option. Prefabricated brackets do not mean a generic treatment plan. Read more about metal braces and their care.
If you prefer to remove your appliance for meals, ask about Invisalign and its daily wear requirements.
Questions to ask your orthodontist before choosing
Bring these questions to your consultation:
-
What problem are we correcting, and would either type of braces handle my bite equally well?
-
What, specifically, would the custom bracket plan change in my case?
-
What is the estimated treatment time and visit schedule for each option, and what could change it?
-
Will the LightForce brackets be tooth-colored ceramic, and what will the wires and ties look like?
-
Are records, repairs, emergency visits and retainers included in both quotes?
-
How much will insurance cover, and what are the total and monthly out-of-pocket costs under each payment plan?
-
Will I need elastics or other appliances regardless of which brackets I choose?
For children, ask whether growth changes the timing. Adults should mention previous dental work, gum concerns and earlier orthodontic treatment.
Braces are not just for teenagers: the American Association of Orthodontists says approximately one in three orthodontic patients is an adult.
